In 1953 the first diesel locomotive was imported to Sri Lanka. The M1 locomotive was it’s class of locomotives. It was manufactured by British ‘Brush Bangall Traction’. later the government decided to purchase up to 25 of these locomotives because they were praised for their performance. And she had a stunning dark red livery. These 25 locomotives were in service for about 30 years continuously & was praised as the best locomotive class at that time and were removed from service from 1983.
